“Independent Traveler” has moved!

I’ve decided to move my Independent Traveler newsletter to Substack, which is a platform for writers, rather than a marketing tool optimized for customer acquisition and revenue growth.

Substack is an interesting marriage of newsletter, and an old-fashioned blog: the newsletters and articles emailed at at regular intervals, are simultaneously compiled into an attractive and organized online archive where the all live.

This means it’s available not only to existing customers and readers, but also others who may reach it via organic search or recommendations from other readers, or even other Substack writers. Therefore, it helps to grow readership not through “lead magnets” and “sales funnels”, but through built-in sharing features, which also work to create a genuine sense of community around the newsletter.

All these factors make it extremely appealing to me, as the creator of Independent Traveler. So far, I like its ease of use, simplicity, and that it makes my articles look like a professionally designed magazine. I like the single platform where newsletters and blog posts can exist side by side.

If you’re already a subscriber to Independent Traveler

Your bi-weekly email will look very similar to what you’ve been receiving. You can do nothing, and continue to read it every other Sunday as an email, just like you did before. In addition, if you choose, you’ll also get the following:

  • Two new weekly columns,

    • Retooled not Retired (Tuesdays), or explorations on creative ways to design your future at any stage in life

    • The Microescape (Fridays), featuring inspiration, instructions, gear and locations for creating our own tiny adventures.

    • Occasional reflections on running a small, local business

You will be able to customize your subscription to limit the frequency of your emails and the topics to suit your preference. You can also unsubscribe any time from within the email.

  • You can create a free Substack account (if you don’t already have one), which will allow you to like and comment on posts directly. Unlike comments on some other social media platforms, Substack reader discussions tend to be engaging, friendly and quite supportive.

You can still always simply reply to the emails just like before, if you want to send me your comments bur prefer not to join Substack.

If you are not a subscriber, we’d love to have you!!

You can preview the articles here, and —if you like it— join below (you can always unsubscribe if you change your mind).
