Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area

Breathtaking in so many ways, not the least of which the literal effects of arctic winds sweeping off Lake Michigan, raising swirling snowflake-and-sand tornadoes among the towering dunes. We emerged from a long trail through the muffled and peaceful hemlock woods snuggled in deep layer of fresh snow, into unforgiving wind running free over the nearly bare lunar dune landscape. We had hoped to return to the parking area via another parallel trail, but finding it might literally have put us in peril. We did lean into the wind to make out way to the edge of the big lake, but walking along it, let alone keeping our eyelids open in search of a footpath, was out of the question. We retreated to the relative calm at the edge of the woodland, and enjoyed hot, spicy tea while sitting on a snow covered log. This is a spectacular, vast and wild area, and I hope we have a chance to explore it more in all seasons.

Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness south border is adjacent to Ludington State Park with additional 21 miles of hiking trails. Ambitious hikers can access this area directly, and combine the trails that both parks offer for an extended adventure. Driving between the two requires going around Hamlin Lake, a journey of about 40 minutes.

Summary:

  • We had decent phone reception departing from Nurmberg parking area along the main Nordhouse Dune Trail in the middle of winter, but don’t count on it as you descend deeper into the wilderness.

  • 4 miles of undeveloped remote Lake Michigan shoreline, with dunes up to 140 feet tall.

  • 10 miles of unmarked hiking trails can be extended by connecting to trails in adjacent Ludington SP. Good trail maps and compass strongly recommended, especially in winter when it may be very difficult to see trails.

  • Spectacular view will reward hikers who climb to the top of Big Sable Point Lighthouse.

  • Backcountry camping is permitted, provided you follow the guidelines outlines on the Forest Service page below. If you prefer designated camping, there are sites available at Ludington SP to the south, and at a recreation area to the north.

  • Amazing opportunities for hammock camping.

  • No amenities. Everything, including food and water, must be carried in, and trash must be carried out.
