Summary:

  • Camping is available on both islands, but only South Manitou is suitable for a day trips.

  • South Manitou is home to giant old-growth cedar trees in an area known as The Valley of the Giants.

  • For an immersive wilderness experience, head out to North Manitou. Since it’s a wilderness area, no pets and no wheeled conveyances are permitted, anything brought in must be carried out, and no open fires are allowed except in designated community fire rings.

  • The islands do not currently have any residents, but the ones that used to live there left ghost towns that can be explored.

  • The underwater area surrounding the islands is a state and federally protected archeological preserve because of over 50 known shipwreck sites.
